There are a number of additional factors to consider, from breakdown, having the correct insurance, and the knowledge that help is at hand if something should go wrong. As well as our normal pre-hire checks, vehicles going on the Continent are fully inspected in our workshops to help to ensure you have a trouble-free journey.
Insurance
We organise all of the vehicle paperwork required from your Green Card (which proves your insurance whilst driving on the Continent), a Letter of Authority and European Breakdown Cover. We also supply a Breakdown Emergency Kit which includes:
- Warning Triangle
- High Visibility Jacket
- First Aid Kit
- Fire Extinguisher
- Spare Vehicle Bulbs
In addition to this you will need to supply, if required:
- GB Sticker
- Headlamp Beam Converters
- Breathalyser
Age limits for vehicles for Continental use are normally 25 to 69 with a minimum of 5 years driving experience. An endorsement free UK full driving licence is preferred although certain endorsements may be accepted.
Legal Requirements
To comply with current European Law, vehicles with over 9 seats require a tachograph to be used. Our vehicles require the driver digital cards which you have to apply for from the DVLA. This can take up to 3 weeks, so we suggest you apply well in advance. Please contact us if you need assistance with the application process.
Pricing
There are a number of additional costs involved in taking a hire vehicle abroad which may vary depending on your destination, route of travel etc, so the only way to get a comprehensive quote is to contact us by completing our online contact form being sure to supply your intended dates of travel, your crossing route including provisional dates and times, your destination, and your drivers details (date of birth, details of endorsements, and test date are useful - all can be found on your licence).
It can take some time for us to organise your travel documents so ensure you have contacted us on 01329 822334 well in advance of your intended travel. Normally we need a minimum of 3 working days notice to ensure we have everything you need.
As a rough guide to our pricing you can expect to pay:
- The standard vehicle hire charges PLUS approximately an additional 10%.
- Approx £49.00 - £149.00 for your Green Card, upto 7 days.
- The commercial vehicle Breakdown & Recovery costs, at our cost.
- Any additional insurance charges, at our cost.
